Kids in motion at scouts

At Gabbi’s scouts this week, the theme was Mataraki, the Maori New Year celebration. While the kids were busy on the carpet, making stars (stars are part of the mythology around Matariki) I decided to give sketching the kids in motion another go. They’re kids so they don’t sit still for very long, and I still get nervous as soon as I put pen to paper. I pray the person being sketched doesn’t move, but they always do!

Buffalos in Hluhluwe

My Uncle is a travel guide around Africa, and he sends photos of his travels. He sees the most amazing wildlife and even though I don’t paint animals, I really wanted to give these buffalos a shot, using my travel journal style. I’m quite happy with them;-)

Arataki Visitor Centre - picnic table

A day out at the Arataki Visitor Centre with family. After our forest walk, we had a rest, with some food, hot tea and the most delicious Belgium Ice Cream, in huge home-made waffle cones.... so yum! I only had my tiny sketchbook with me today, so I drew the little things we had on the table instead of painting the landscape, which was awesome.

Abstract Africa

I don’t do abstract often, but I wanted to play around with some new acrylic ink that I’d bought. I was busy with a page in my watercolour nature journal based on a photo taken in South Africa, and it just wasn’t working out. In my frustration I hauled out the inks and messed around. It might not be pretty, but it was fun to do.
